The Hazelton B Hydroelectric Project, located near Hazelton, Idaho, has
utilized the natural drop along a portion of the North Side Canal Company's North Side Main
Canal. The 7.7 MW
project, which operates as a run-of-canal type facility, was developed to divert
irrigation flows from the canal into a newly constructed power canal. An
integral intake and powerhouse structure located at the downstream end of the
power canal contains two horizontal pit turbines. Flows are returned to the
canal system in a newly constructed tail race. Approximately one mile of the
canal has been excavated to eliminate tailwater encroachment and increase net
head to the plant. The project began commercial operation in 1993. Operation and maintenance is
performed by Ida-West Operating Services, Inc.
